Newcastle lies in the heart of north-eastern England. Along with Gateshead, the city is the local capital for a population of upwards of two million people, and plays an important part in propelling the regional financial growth, research and education, and in creating cultural assets of international significance. Newcastle is the main business and administration center of the area, and has an international airport.

The city also has two universities, and colleges. The city’s unique history of industrial innovations alongside a unique landscape and steady commercial and cultural connections with Europe, combined to create a singular identity and culture. Newcastle is a vivid place of international renown when it comes to its sports events, nightlife, parks, modern art and historic architecture. Currently the city undergoes major renovations; The historic center, Grainger Town, boasting classical Georgian architecture, has lately been reconstructed and restored; The wharf area with its breathtaking bridges–old and new alike-was repaired; The historic parts of the city, such as the walls from the middle ages, were also renovated and opened to the public.

Newcastle-Gateshead’s cultural strategy, “Building Bridges”, is a ten-year plan for developing arts, culture and sports that aided to put Newcastle-Gateshead in Newsweek’s list of Eight Major Cultural Centers of the World.

The Haifa-Newcastle Twinning was approved by City Management on December 11, 1979
