General information and special features

Shantou consists of six districts and one county, covers 2245 km² land area. Shantou locates in the east of Guangdong Province and in the south of the Hanjiang River Delta. Shantou City has always been an important transportation hub, an import and export port and a commodity distribution center and known as the "Communication Center of South China and Gateway of East Guangdong".



Shantou is one of the first four Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in China, a metropolis of Chaoshan People and a famous hometown to numerous overseas Chinese around the world. Located at the intersection of Pan-Pearl River Delta and the West Bank Economic Zone across Taiwan Strait, the city has always served as a transportation hub, cargo export and import center and products distribution center for east Guangdong Province, southeast Jiangxi Province and southwest Fujian Province 

Shantou Port, with a coastline of 336 km and 40 islands of different sizes, is close to international golden shipping route in west Pacific Ocean. It is an important starting port of Maritime Silk Road 


Shantou is a city with profound cultural reserve and a city where culture is respected. The city’s unique culture is represented by 11 museums, 8 public libraries, 13 national intangible cultural heritages, 28 provincial intangible cultural heritages.


Shantou has 2 Universities - Shantou University and Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT). 1050 middle schools and elementary schools with about 140,000 students, 914 kindergartens with about 180,000 students. 

The Haifa-Chengdu Twin Cities Treaty was signed on December 16, 2015
