General information and special features

Erfurt is the capital of Thuringia, known as The Green Heart of Germany. It has one of the oldest preserved urban centers in Germany, The Old City, which was extensively renovated and reconstructed, and is imbued with a unique charm created by the buildings from the middle ages and the parks and gardens that surround it. In 1994 the city won a gold medal in a national competition for its excellence in the preservation of historic buildings. The city spreads over 1,400 acres, with close to 5,000 acres of woods, 950 acres of waters and 100 miles of rivers.

Being the capital of Thuringia, all local government’s offices and agencies are located in Erfurt.

Economy

The industry in Erfurt is comprised mainly of small and medium-sized companies. The main financial branches in Erfurt are electronics and micro-electronics, software development, machine engineering, food industry, building and horticulture. All in all, more than 10,000 companies are registered in Erfurt’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In addition, Erfurt is the country’s hub of service businesses and public services, which among others are logistics and transshipment.

Culture

The city has a number of museums, which offer exhibitions of art, history, anthropology and so on. On top of that there are galleries in the city, and forums dealing with culture and performing arts. The theater in Erfurt hosts operas, musicals, ballet shows, concerts and theatrical productions for all ages. Erfurt also has a marionette theater and a political cabaret. The city also offers many recreational activities and establishments such as pubs, clubs and cafes.
